BENEDICT
HOUSE and COTTAGES
The
Benedict House is a small, two-story Queen Anne style historic
house built in the late 1800s. It was saved from demolition
by the Lawrence Preservation Alliance who sought our assistance
in creating a suitable plan to preserve the structure. The campus
of apartments that evolved utilizes an open lot adjacent to the
historic house. Rather than demolishing the house we created a
campus of rental units that enabled the project to maintain a
positive cash flow and keep the house. We designed inexpensive
methods to echo the historic house in a contemporary manner; such
as the hand folded shingles we made that capture the tactile qualities
of the earlier style. Many recycled materials are evident throughout
the new cottages.
