KANSAS LONG HOUSE

This project expressed our interest in regional materials and ways of dwellings. Clad in native limestone and roofed in sod the Longhouse brings together life and nature, aesthetics and spirit. The south orientation of the house takes advantage of direct solar gain and provides an abundance of natural light in every room. The long plan and its narrow twenty-four foot width contributes to natural cross ventilation. The breezes that cross the prairie to the south enter low windows along that elevation and then exit through high windows on the north side. The sod roof minimizes excessive heat buildup in the summer and provides insulation in the winter. Butterfly milkweed compliment the native grasses in the spring through early summer and wild turkey and deer browse regularly in the fields visible from every room.
