NEWTON
HOUSE
This house nestles into the grass on the open rolling land west
of Lawrence, KS. The simple form is inspired by the common industrial
/agricultural buildings of our region. The elementary relationship
to the ground and sky of these vernacular buildings is a continual
source of inspiration for our work. Visually anchoring the form
to the horizon is a brise-soleil, continuous louvers that provide
shading from the intense summer sun. Enhancing the sense of the
prairie spilling through the interior of the building are continuous
windows set into galvanized frames. Arched overhead trusses and
a gently curving wall of glass and steel define the interior spaces.
These materials were used extensively to strengthen the contrast
with the grassland and to advance our concerns for sustainability.
