This project focused on issues of sustainability more than any
single family project we had completed at the time. The three bedroom
house is located on fifty acres just west of Baldwin City, KS.
Although the site is former pasture land, conservation of the
ground is always a primary consideration as we preferred to develop the sloped edges rather than take up the good pasture or tillage area with
the building footprint. Passive solar heating was a primary consideration.
Every room has south facing floor to ceiling windows and operable windows on at least two walls. This was possible with the addition of an interior courtyard. The concrete mass floor collects the sun's energy and heats the rooms in the winter and every room has extensive cross ventilation to take advantage of the breezes coming across the grassland site.
