TOMBO HOUSE

The client for this house was a professor of business at the University of Kansas. Educated as a cultural anthropologist, her lifelong interest in Japanese culture was evident as the design process unfolded. We were not only drawn to their often dramatic use of concrete but to the rural tradition of Japanese farmhouses. The meeting of the interior and exterior occupies an important part of this tradition, which realizes the marriage of the house and garden. Resting on top of the concrete walls that define the building is a "storm shrine" for her to watch storms move across the Kansas landscape.
