TOMBO
HOUSE
Our
client for this house is a professor of business at the University
of Kansas. Educated as a cultural anthropologist, her lifelong
interest in Japanese culture was evident as the design process
unfolded. We were increasingly drawn to the rural tradition of
Japanese farmhouses as a source of inspiration. The meeting of
the interior and exterior occupies an important part of this tradition,
which realizes the marriage of the house and garden. We try to
work in a language our clients understand and often draw from
their interests to help fuel the design process. We are always
taken to the tectonics of architecture, the sensuous qualities
of space, light, materiality and the resultant poetics of dwelling.
