ART STUDIO + HOUSE
A distinguished professor of art at the University of Kansas asked us to design this one bedroom house with a 5,000 square foot art studio. He and his wife produced large-scale art pieces and needed floor area, a large volume and uninterrupted wall space. The house is designed to screen the spaces from a noisy street to the south. Due to the art being housed and produced it was important to maximize the views and minimize the direct sunlight when locating windows. The site drops over twenty feet towards a living quarters on the lower floor that opens through two story windows to a pond to the Northeast. The butterfly roof collects water that drops from the roof at each end into sculptural downspouts. The low maintenance exterior is achieved with thin concrete panels we cast on the site.
