ART STUDIO + HOUSE

A distinguished professor of art at the University of Kansas asked us to design this one bedroom house with a 5,000 sf art studio. He and his wife produced large-scale art pieces and needed floor area, a large volume and uninterrupted wall space. The house is designed to screen the rooms from the noisy street to the south while still opening to the pond to the northeast. The site drops over twenty feet in its length toward the pond. The living quarters occupy the lower end facing the pond. The butterfly roof collects water that drops from the roof at each end into sculptural downspouts. The low maintenance exterior is achieved with thin concrete panels we cast on the site.
